What is Morse code?
Morse code is a way of writing letters, numbers, and punctuation using just two signals: a short one called a dot ( · ) and a long one called a dash ( − ). Samuel Morse and Alfred Vail developed it in the 1830s for the electric telegraph, and within a few decades those two little signals were carrying messages across continents and under oceans — the world's first truly global communication system. What makes the code remarkable is that it works through almost any medium. You can tap it, beep it, flash it with a torch, or send it over radio waves. Because it only needs two distinguishable signals, it cuts through noise and interference where voice communication fails — which is why sailors, pilots, and amateur radio operators still rely on it nearly two centuries later.
Every character has a unique pattern, and the design is ruthlessly efficient: E, the most common letter in English, gets the shortest code (a single dot), while rare letters get longer ones. That efficiency made the code fast to send by hand — and it's one reason the system survived into the digital age. Spot the patterns — don't memorize blindly
The chart looks random until you notice its hidden structure. A ( ·− ) and N ( −· ) are mirror images of each other, and so are D and U, B and V, and G and W — learning these pairs together roughly halves the work. Letters built from repeated signals, like S ( ··· ), H ( ···· ), and O ( −−− ), have a rhythm that sticks after a few listens.
Numbers are even friendlier. Every digit is exactly five signals long: 1 through 5 start with that many dots and fill the rest with dashes, while 6 through 9 do the reverse. Zero is five dashes. Punctuation rounds out the system: a question mark is ··−−·· , a period is ·−·−·− , and the @ sign ( ·−−·−· ) was added in 2004 — the first new character in over half a century, so operators could exchange email addresses. Tap any symbol in the chart above to hear how it sounds.

Morse code spacing: why silence matters
In Morse code, the gaps carry as much meaning as the signals. The same three dots can be the letter S or the letters E-E-E — the only difference is the silence around them.

One unit equals the length of a dot, and everything scales from your speed setting. At 20 words per minute a unit is 60 milliseconds, so a dot lasts 0.06 seconds and a word gap lasts 0.42 seconds. The translator applies these ITU-standard timings automatically — and if you're learning, the Farnsworth setting keeps each character at full speed while stretching the gaps, which is how real radio operators train their ears.

SOS deserves a special mention: it doesn't stand for "Save Our Souls" or anything else. The sequence was adopted in 1906 purely because it's unmistakable — nine signals in a simple, symmetric rhythm that no natural interference is likely to imitate, sent as one continuous pattern with no letter gaps. How to learn Morse code
Learning Morse is closer to learning an instrument than memorizing a table — the goal is to recognize characters by rhythm, not to count dots and dashes.
Start with E and T. One dot, one dash. These two letters teach your ear the fundamental contrast the whole system is built on. Then add the mirror pairs — A and N, D and U — so each letter you learn brings a second one along for free.
Practice by sound, not sight. Reading a chart builds the wrong skill. Play short words in the translator at a slow speed (5–10 WPM) and try to identify letters with your eyes closed. Turn on Farnsworth timing so each character keeps its true rhythm while you get extra thinking time between letters.
Decode a little every day. Ten minutes daily with words like HI, OK, YES, and HELP beats a two-hour session once a week. The Random button gives you fresh practice material you haven't rehearsed. Most learners can copy slow Morse within a few weeks of daily practice; reaching conversational speed takes a few months.

Where Morse code is used today
Morse never actually died — it moved to the places where its simplicity is a superpower.
Amateur radio
Thousands of licensed HAM operators communicate in CW (continuous wave) Morse every day. A Morse signal can be received cleanly at power levels and distances where voice would be pure static, making it the mode of choice for long-distance, low-power contacts.
Aviation
Radio navigation beacons still identify themselves by broadcasting their station code in Morse. Pilots verify they've tuned the right VOR or NDB by listening for its dots and dashes — a system in use at airports worldwide.
Emergencies & survival
